Communication requires context. If design ignores the need of the user, client, or culture, it will fail.

I am a Designer

My professional design career started in 1998; however, my journey started in Kindergarten. While baseball player, professional golfer, and astrophysicist didn’t work out I can safely say I’m glad they didn’t. I love what I do.

The Joy of Design

As a profession, the work of design offers the opportunity to explore. With each project, the designer embarks on the work of researching the client and their needs while staying culturally relevant in the development of the final product. And the fun part is that each problem and every client is different, opening opportunities for challenge, discovery and innovation.

Great Responsibility

Design has the power to shape public perception. It defines culture. It exemplifies the aspirations of users and consumers.

Design has the responsibility to serve. It makes unfamiliar environments easier to use. It clarifies hard-to-understand concepts. In a global culture, it bridges language barriers.

There’s great power in design to make changes for good and I believe we as designers should take responsibility for our decisions in using what we know to serve those who use what we create.

I am an Advocate

Design’s first work often isn’t about finding a solution, rather its work is defining the problem. From my experience, clients can have a difficult time articulating what they need. I believe designers should be advocates for our clients. I endeavor to listen to my client’s needs by assessing their cultural makeup and aspirations and then to create solutions that are relevant and effective.
